Samsung Unveils Two New Folding Smartphones in Response to Rival Competition

July 28, 2023 : In a recent launch event, Samsung introduced two new folding smartphones, a tablet, and two smartwatches. The new phones, Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Fold 5 boast improved hinge rigidity and display brightness compared to their predecessors. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a clamshell-style folding phone with a larger cover display, allowing for enhanced selfie-taking and easy access to notifications and widgets. The Galaxy Fold 5, with its 6.2-inch display foldable to a 7.6-inch tablet-like screen, features a brighter main display and an under-display camera.

Foldable phones remain a niche in the market but are growing rapidly, with Samsung holding a dominant position. The company’s first foldable handset in 2019 gave it an 80% share of global foldable shipments in 2022. The market expects foldable phone shipments to double to 30 million in 2023, though they still represent a small fraction of the total smartphone market.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S9, available in three sizes, features a 120-hertz display, enhanced speakers, and the ability to mirror Windows PC apps. The Galaxy Watch 6 and 6 Classic have larger displays, improved battery life, and various health and fitness tracking features.

Samsung’s focus on foldable comes despite a contracting smartphone market, but there are early signs of recovery. Other tech giants, like Google with its Pixel Fold, are also entering the foldable phone market, but anticipation remains high for what Apple may introduce.

The prices for the new devices range from $999.99 for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 to $1,799.99 for the Galaxy Fold 5, $799.99 for the Galaxy Tab S9, and starting at $299.99 for the Galaxy Watch 6 and Watch 6 Classic.
