March 31, 2023: Philipp Plein, the German fashion designer known for his disruptive style, has launched a collection of Swiss-made luxury timepieces. The Crypto King and Queen collection, produced in Lugano, Switzerland, features a double-layer transparent dial and case-back with the brand’s signature skull, double-dome sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, and colourways ranging from red and black to lime green. The watches are aimed at a niche 1% market and will be sold with limited edition NFTs by digital artist Antoni Tudisco, which can be minted via a QR code engraved on a metal plaque. Plein’s watches, which sit between Tag Heuer and Rolex in price, will be sold for around $3,000, with the most expensive rose gold model coming in at just under $20,000. Plein has partnered with Timex Group to launch fashion watches, accepting cryptocurrency payments since 2021 and opening a Web3 concept store in London in 2022. Meanwhile, Gucci has launched its high watchmaking division, offering five signature collections featuring tourbillons, moon phase movements, and a new perpetual calendar. It is a forerunner in the Web3 and metaverse, partnering with Yuga Labs, Bored Ape Yacht Club, and The Sandbox Game.
