April 19, 2023 : The meal delivery kit industry is booming, with fresh food meal kits expected to become a $10 billion industry by 2024. However, much of the money spent on packaging to keep food cold is wasted, with a significant amount of packaging not being recycled. In response to this issue, companies like Thermosafe, Sealed Air, and Virginia-based startup TemperPack are developing sustainable packaging solutions. TemperPack uses corn starch and recyclable paper in its products, making them both compostable and easily recyclable.
TemperPack is working with grocers, meal kit companies, biotech firms, and online pharmacies and has begun placing the machines that create the insulation within customer facilities to increase sustainability and reduce shipping costs. Dale Trigger, head of engineering at Martha Stewart-branded meal maker Marley Spoon, said that the goal of the new packaging is to save money at various points in the supply chain and eliminate logistics and shipping costs.
TemperPack has raised more than $200 million in funding from backers, including Goldman Sachs, Grosvenor Food & Agtech, Revolution Growth, SJF Ventures, Arborview Capital, and Harbert Growth Partners. With its affordable, high-performance and sustainable packaging, TemperPack is poised to make a significant impact on the meal delivery kit industry and reduce waste caused by traditional packaging methods.
